    Impunity Watch is an international non-profit organisation working with victims, survivors and communities affected by violence to deliver redress for grave human rights violations, uproot deeply ingrained structures of impunity, and promote justice and peace.

    We advocate for the voices of victims to be meaningfully included in the design and implementation of policies that advance victims' rights for truth, justice, reparations, as well as guarantees of non-recurrence. We promote local actors' active involvement in transformation after violence and abuses, and we also support informal initiatives that complement formal transitional justice mechanisms.

    Impunity Watch currently works in Central America, the Middle East and North Africa, the Great Lakes region of Africa, and the Western Balkans. We have presence in Guatemala and Burundi, and our headquarters are in The Hague, The Netherlands.

    We are looking for an experienced Head of Communications to lead our global communications strategy, strengthen our voice and influence on fighting impunity and transforming justice, and amplify our impact externally.

    The ideal candidate will be a strategic thinker and leader with a passion for justice and human rights. They should have excellent communication skills, experience working in post-conflict contexts and a strong track record in developing compelling narratives and engaging diverse audiences to inspire mission-driven change. They will also be confident in strengthening internal processes to improve external communications outcomes.

    Responsibilities
    1. Develop and implement global communications strategies aligned with Impunity Watch's Strategic Plan and mission and vision, to support our programme, research, policy and fundraising objectives.
    2. Oversee and contribute to the creation of external communications materials, including press releases, statements, op-eds, and key organisational reports (such as the annual report).
    3. Support programme teams in amplifying their communications and outreach, including through developing programme-specific communications strategies
    4. Embed strategic communications thinking into planning, advocacy campaigns, research projects, and other initiatives, and support internal knowledge sharing.
    5. Ensure the integration of Impunity Watch's brand and voice in all our communications outputs.
    6. Support the development of content plans and oversee the organisation's digital presence, including website content, social media channels, and email newsletters, to effectively engage and mobilise supporters.
    7. Proactively monitor political developments, especially in the EU, to identify opportunities to position our work and messages in current debates, and strengthen our visibility to donors and policymakers

    8. Cultivate and maintain relationships with media outlets, journalists, and influencers to increase visibility and coverage of Impunity Watch's work.
    9. Provide strategic guidance and support to senior leadership on messaging, positioning, and public engagement.
    10. Supervise a small team of communications professionals, providing mentorship, direction, and feedback to ensure high-quality work and professional growth.
    11. Strengthen internal capacity for communications through sharing best practices, and providing guidance and training.

    Essential skills and experience

    • At least 7 years of experience in leading successful communications strategies for mission-driven organisations with particular focus on human rights, transitional justice, accountability and social justice

    • Strong affinity with the mission and vision of Impunity Watch

    • Excellent writing and editing skills in English, with the ability to distil complex issues into clear and compelling messages for diverse audiences.

    • Bachelor's degree or equivalent education in communications, journalism, international law, human rights or a related field; advanced degree preferred.

    • Demonstrated leadership ability, with experience managing teams and fostering a collaborative and inclusive work environment.

    • Experience of supporting communications for partnerships, networks and coalitions, in particular involving civil society/ grassroots partners

    • Proficiency in digital communications platforms and tools, including social media, website management systems, and email marketing (Mailchimp).

    • Experience of securing media coverage and building internal capacity to engage the media, for example through interview training.

    • Experience working in diverse global teams

    Desirable skills and experience

    • Demonstrated passion for or knowledge of human rights, justice and peacebuilding, for example through academic, professional or personal experience

    • Experience working in post-conflict countries.

    • Knowledge of political systems and policy making processes, in particular at the EU level, and the role of communications in supporting lobbying work

    • Knowledge of languages other than English, in particular Arabic, Dutch, French or Spanish

    • Salary and benefits based on location and commensurate with experience plus 25 days paid holiday. As a guide, if you are based in the Netherlands, the position is placed on BBRA Scale 11 (gross salary range of €3662,77 – €5586,12, depending on skills and experience) and one will receive 8% holiday allowance as well as an end of year allowance.
