    Are you a passionate defender of human rights, a great networker and familiar with Dutch civil society and policy processes? Join us and represent the global Hivos community as Advocacy Coordinator in the Netherlands & the EU.

    Like us, you are convinced that the issues we're working on are international challenges. Whether it's addressing the climate crisis, countering global anti-gender and anti-LGBTIQ+ forces, or alleviating the suffocating pressure civil society is facing around the world. Institutions and policymakers in the Netherlands and in the EU can play a crucial role in mitigating these threats. And – where necessary – should be held to account when their policies fail to do so.

    In this role you will develop and execute an effective advocacy agenda. You will identify key asks and make sure these reflect the priorities of the organizations that we work with. You will represent Hivos in several Dutch networks and forge new coalitions when you identify opportunities for collaboration.

    Through your work we can shine a light on our convictions and solutions.

    Responsibilities

    1. Executing effective advocacy strategies

    You coordinate the development of a Hivos-wide advocacy agenda in the Netherlands. You will make use of the thematic expertise of several communication & advocacy colleagues in The Hague and in our regional offices, but it is up to you to align messaging, coordinate efforts and ensure Hivos strengthens its influence in Dutch society and towards the EU.

    Additionally, you ensure our agenda is based on the priorities that our program community identifies. When advocating, you speak on behalf of our organization and the people we work with around the world.

    2. Agenda setting

    You're able to easily identify key issues and you proactively create entry points and interventions in order to generate space and support for Hivos' strategies, ideas and activities with key decision makers.

    3. Mobilizing forces

    You join forces with people and organizations in the Netherlands and at EU-level. These can be traditional allies or new partners that share our ambitions. Together you develop effective advocacy activities.

    4. Keeping an eye on the news

    You are our eyes and ears when it comes to newsworthy developments, trends and policy changes. You're able to coordinate a swift answer on behalf of Hivos by writing an opinion piece, a blog or a press release, and in turn inform the Hivos community around the world.

    5. Building evidence

    You commission and guide research and other knowledge products that strengthen Hivos' views and further substantiate the thought leadership of our organization.

    What we're looking for

    This position is based at Hivos' Global Office in The Hague. Due to the nature of the work, fluency in Dutch is an absolute prerequisite.

    We're looking for an experienced advocacy expert that knows their way around Dutch civil society and is familiar with political and policy processes in the Netherlands. What we're additionally paying attention to:

  • Extensive experience in developing effective advocacy strategies
  • Strong political interest and the ability to translate external intelligence into timely and actionable tactics and demands
  • Experience in working in and with coalitions
  • An up-to-date network within Dutch civil society, and great relations with (potential) Hivos allies in particular
  • Ability to balance coordinating tasks with hands-on work, such as: writing a convincing op/ed, organizing a round table or expert session, and/or curating the production of research papers
  • You like strategizing (or facilitate strategizing sessions), but are also energized when you quickly need to come into action when (news) developments require you to do so
  • You like to coach advocacy colleagues and strategically advise Hivos' senior management
  • You are sensitive to intercultural collaboration

    • What we offer

    In this position you will work at our Global Office in the city center of The Hague, where you will closely work with the communication team and advocacy specialists. At the same time, you will be part of an international community of highly motivated and dedicated people.

    The gross salary range we offer is between € 4.155,52 and € 5.661,60 per month based on a 36-hour workweek (a 32-hour week is negotiable). We'll take care of a laptop and travel expenses according to our commuting policies. Hivos additionally works according to a 50/50 schedule, which means you are able to work from home 50% of you contract hours.
