To protect the city of St. Petersburg from flooding, a storm surge barrier was constructed in 2011, named the St. Petersburg Flood Protection Barrier. The barrier protects the city from storm surges caused by the Baltic Sea storms.
Royal HaskoningDHV conducted comprehensive design studies for the barrier. Its design was especially challenging regarding the wave-induced forcing experienced by the storm surge barrier gates. This is due to the complex wave pattern near the construction caused by refraction, diffraction, and reflection. The shape of the gates results in standing waves travelling along the gates. At the time such behaviour could only be captured using physical modelling for the design. Nowadays, Royal HaskoningDHV applies a recently developed, state-of-the art Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) model called CoastalFOAM for this type of problems. We are looking into application of this model to complex 3D geometries. This project is a perfect validation case to test the 3D capabilities of Coastal FOAM.
What you do as an Intern
We are looking for a motivated intern with an interest in hydraulic engineering and numerical modelling. The assignment is to evaluate the wave-induced forces on the St. Petersburg Flood Protection Barrier using a 3D numerical CoastalFOAM model. The numerical simulations are to be compared to the results of laboratory experiments that have been conducted in St. Petersburg. The measurement data is available for this study.
