    Background Information

The group Sensors Mechanics is part of the cluster Mechanical Development and is responsible for the design of optical sensor systems, like wafer height measurement systems and image sensors.
Part of the development portfolio of this group are the so-called image sensors – different types - which are located on top of the wafer stage and are used to measure e.g. the position of the focal plane of the projection lens, the light energy, optical aberrations and the position of the stage with respect to a reference. These sensors have in common that they use a camera or sensor covered with a glass plate with optical markers. The glass plate with markers is glued with a 2-component epoxy in the sensor housing. The glue connection needs to be very stable over time, since every deviation will reduce the quality of the integrated circuit of our customer. A problematic factor in the aforementioned stability is the outgassing that occurs when glue is exposed to the vacuum inside our scanners. In-scanner test time is scarce, hence the need for an offline platform to test potential improvements.

    Your Assignment

The assignment is to set-up and conduct experiments to investigate and improve the drift inherent to some performance critical glue connections. Set-ups are available at ASML and elsewhere, it will be your task to find out which of them are suitable and how to exploit them. Is the instrument accurate enough? What to use as samples and how to realize a stable support? How to process the results and present them in a meaningful way?
Next to the measurement part, you'll need to understand the sub-nanometer drift you are studying to correctly interpret the results and to determine the requirements for the set-up. Ideas to improve the stability of the glue connection that might arise then are of course welcomed. If time allows, you'll get the chance to transform these ideas to prototypes to demonstrate feasibility and performance on your set-up.

    Your Profile

To be considered for this role, you are:

  • Master student with a background in mechanical engineering, physics or equivalent expertise
  • Self-propelling, solution oriented, communicative student with a pro-active approach with a hands-on mentality to conduct glue experiments including analyses.
  • This is a graduation/apprentice internship for 5 days a week with a duration of 5-9 months, starting in September.

Please note that we can only consider students who are enrolled at a school for the entire duration of the internship.

Change the world – one nanometer at a time.

Become an intern at a Dutch company that's a global industry leader. You'll gain valuable experience in a highly innovative environment – one that sparks your imagination and creativity. In addition to a monthly internship allowance of maximum €600 (plus possible housing allowance and free public transport), you'll get practical guidance from experts in the field and the chance to work in and experience a dynamic team environment.

    ASML: be part of progress.

ASML is a high-tech company headquartered in the Netherlands. We manufacture the complex lithography machines that chipmakers use to produce integrated circuits, or computer chips. What we do is at the heart of all the electronic devices that keep us informed, entertained, and connected. Every day, you use electronics that simply wouldn't exist without our machines.

Behind ASML's innovations are engineers who think ahead. The people who work at our company include some of the most creative minds in physics, electrical engineering, mathematics, chemistry, mechatronics, optics, mechanical engineering, computer science and fields which are not technically oriented. We believe we can always do better. We believe the winning idea can come from anyone. We love what we do – not because it's easy, but because it's hard.

Students: getting ready for real-world R&D

We're a global team of about 42,000 people of 140 different nationalities and counting. Headquartered in Europe's top tech hub, the Brainport Eindhoven region in the Netherlands, our operations are spread across Europe, Asia, and the US. In such an environment, your colleagues may be sitting next door, or they could be thousands of kilometers away in a different country – or even working for a different company.

    Diversity and inclusion

ASML is an Equal Opportunity Employer that values and respects the importance of a diverse and inclusive workforce. It is the policy of the company to recruit, hire, train and promote persons in all job titles without regard to race, color, religion, sex, age, national origin, veteran status, disability, sexual orientation, or gender identity.
