Vacaturenummer:13005- You will be working at the Philosophy department of the University of Amsterdam, more specifically with the Philosophy and Public Affairs group, a group that is responsible for the courses in ethics, political and social philosophy in the Bachelor and Master programmes in Philosophy.


What are you going to do?

  • For four years, you will contribute to the ethics and political philosophy curriculum of the PPA group, both in introductory and more advanced courses in the BA programme. This because several members of the staff are currently enjoying research grants, sabbaticals, or visiting positions abroad. You will give seminars, review papers, supervise theses, and grade exams. In this, you will be assisted by experienced members of staff, but a sufficient level of independence and experience is required. You will also participate in other group activities, such as attending talks and colloquia.

Tasks and responsibilities:

- teaching lectures, seminars and tutorials;
- supervising Bachelor's theses;
- attending meetings and lectures, preparing for teaching, updating and translating course materials or assignments and selecting teaching methods, in consultation with colleagues and the senior lecturer;
- marking assignments, theses and papers, providing input on tests and test questions; with the final authority and responsibility residing with senior staff members
- coordinating practical matters around your own teaching working group (such as handling administrative matters and communicating with students);
- supervising BA theses and providing individual supervision to students (mentoring, coaching and supervising internships).


What do you have to offer?

  • We are looking for a highly motivated colleague with an MA (preferably ReMa) degree in Philosophy, with a demonstrable interest and expertise in practical philosophy (ethics and political philosophy). Ideally, you already have some experience with teaching and are interested in pursuing a (selffunded) PhDtrack. You are confident yet eager to learn, communicative and stress resistant.

Your experience and profile:

- you have an MA degree in philosophy, specialized (MA thesis) in ethics or political philosophy;
- you have attained the University Teaching Qualification (UTQ). If you have not attained the UTQ you are required to start with the UTQ track upon commencement of your employment contract and obtain the certificate within three years of employment;
- you are pedagogically/didactically competent (able to cater to students' starting situation, to teach a curriculum that has already been developed, to supervise students and to make an active contribution in meetings with fellow lecturers);
- you have a good command of the Dutch language. If you do not speak Dutch, we offer the opportunity to take and pass the state examination for Dutch as a Second Language programme II;
- you are able to teach in English.
