The Leiden University Centre for Linguistics (LUCL) is looking for a lecturer, starting 1 August 2024, to teach on our BA African Studies and BA Linguistics.


Key responsibilities

Teach 4 courses in total with a particular focus on African Linguistics, offering introductory and intermediate courses on the study of African Languages, Linguistic fieldwork and Language and culture in Africa.

You will contribute to teaching at the undergraduate level.


Selection criteria

  • You hold a PhD degree in African or General linguistics or a related field;
  • You are a dedicated teacher with a strong academic teaching record, both at the BA and at the MA level, as demonstrated by teaching evaluations;
  • You have experience of conducting fieldwork;
  • Experience of teaching field methods will be an added advantage;
  • Experience of teaching a range of topics in African Linguistics will be an advantage.

With over 120 linguists working at the Institute, it is a rich research environment that prides itself on fostering scientific excellence and teaching.

LUCL has a longstanding tradition in the study of the world's languages and features unique linguistic expertise. Current theoretical insights are combined with modern experimental methods in its research profile area 'Language Diversity in the World'.

Researchers from our six umbrella research groups are experts in their respective fields, but equally find innovative ways of collaborating with other fields and disciplines.


Terms and conditions

We offer a fixed-term appointment as a lecturer at 0.5 FTE (19 hours) per week, including some research and development time, for a total period of 4 years, with an initial 18 months probation period for which, after positive evaluation of your teaching capabilities, will be extended to the full period.

Salary ranges from € 3,226. to € 5,090.

gross per month (pay scale 10 in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities and commensurate with qualifications and experience).


Leiden University requires teaching staff to obtain the University Teaching Qualification (UTQ), and newly appointed staff is expected to obtain this qualification within 2-3 years from the start of their appointment.
