HBO Internship Computer Vision to Measure Quality of Coil ID's - IJmuiden, Nederland - Tata Steel

What's your job?

Tata Steel produces and delivers strip steel in the form of coils. As soon as a coil is produced it carries an identification number until the next step in the production process. In hot strip mills this number is spray painted on multiple sides of a coil. Applying OCR to read Coil IDs can be a valuable tool to further automate coil handling. OCR is already applied in multiple production locations with varying accuracy, despite optimized lighting conditions and cameras.

In the research of OCR it's well known that performance very much depends on image preprocessing, the number of training examples and deep learning methods. Thousands of images of coils have been collected in one of our coil release stations where Coil ID numbers are applied. Your assignment is to develop a model which will measure the readbility of the coil ID using deep learning (such as OCR) and feature engineering.

We are looking for a bachelor or masters student skilled in computer vision or another discipline that offers computer vision in its curriculum (such as Data Science, Computer Science) for a 4-6 month internship. We expect you to be/have:
