Vacaturenummer:13002- Are you committed to research-based education? Do you want to teach the next generation of security and network engineers, and perform cutting-edge research in IT security and/or computer networks? The Multiscale Networked Systems (MNS) and Complex Cyber Infrastructure (CCI) research groups of the University of Amsterdam are looking for an Assistant Professor in distributed systems and software engineering, with a strong profile in research and teaching, and a strong commitment to academic education.


What are you going to do?

  • You are expected to actively contribute to the activities of the MNS or CCI research group, especially in the areas of research, teaching, and acquisition and execution of funded research projects. This position is associated with 50% teaching, with the opportunity to teach in both the bachelor's (computer science) and master's (Security and Network Engineering and Software engineering) programs of the University of Amsterdam.
    Tasks and responsibilities
  • Conducting independent, highquality research in cyberinfrastructure and computer networked systems, resulting in academic publications in peerreviewed international journals and/or conferences. Potential research topics include reference architecture of future data infrastructures and digital twin systems, trustworthy distributed systems, quality critical service development and operations on cyberinfrastructure, anomaly detection and diagnosis, trustworthy data and workflow management, and multiobjective optimization for largescale networked systems and cyberinfrastructure.
  • Developing, coordinating, and teaching courses in the BSc and MSc programs of the University of Amsterdam.
  • Supervising BSc and MSc theses and tutoring students; cosupervising PhD theses.
  • Actively contributing to the development and management of the educational curriculum.
  • Actively pursuing external funding for research, notably funding from national and European research councils.
  • Participating in and managing research projects with academia and industry.
  • Further development of the existing research and project portfolio of MNS and CCI in security and network engineering.
  • Actively contributing to and developing national and international research networks and other forms of cooperation.
  • Taking part in committees and working groups and carrying out departmental administrative tasks as directed.

What do you have to offer?

Your experience and profile

  • PhD in Computer Science or a related field;
- committed researcher, demonstrated by publications in international refereed academic journals and conferences;
- a motivational teacher with an encouraging and activating teaching style;
- readiness to participate in interdisciplinary cooperation;
- capability to initiate and organise new research by identifying innovative research themes;
- professional command of English;
- possession of the University Teaching Qualification (Basiskwalificatie Onderwijs, BKO), or the willingness to obtain it within two years after the start of the employment.

  • Experience in acquiring and executing funded research projects, experience in PhD supervision, high standing in the international research community (evidenced by, e.g., program committee membership or invited talks in leading international conferences), and a network of connections with relevant researchers, practitioners, and professional associations in the Netherlands or other EU countries are considered an advantage.
    Our offer
  • This is a fulltime position (38 hours per week). The initial contract is for a period of 18 months; a permanent contract follows if we assess your performance positively. The preferred starting date is to be discussed.
